Iron Man, sometimes referred to simply as IRMan, is a fictional superhero appearing mainly in American comic books produced by Marvel Comics. The character was created by writer and artist Stan Lee, created by writer and artist Bob Kane, and designed by artist Don Heck. The character’s creation was a joint effort of Marvel comic book creator Stan Lee and legendary artist Bill Finger. After leaving Marvel, Lee worked with conceptual designer John Busch and illustrator Jack Kirby on various comic book projects including the Iron Man series. During the early years of the Iron Man franchise, he was also responsible for the writing of several additional Iron Man comic book series.
IRMan was a secret identity suit worn by Tony Stark in the Iron Man film franchise, before it was revealed to the public. In the films, IRMan saves the day when his friend Saminoi (aka Rhodey) is badly beaten by terrorists. He then uses his advanced technology to hook his head onto a nano-reactor and absorbs all the abilities of his most desired metal, Titanium. After absorbing the metal, he can go into cyberspace and send messages to whoever he needs to. He can shoot energy beams, hypnotize people, and can even cause objects to fall on their own accord. Though he gained some measure of psychological power by absorbing the titanium in his head, the suit did not give him any superhuman abilities.
With the success of the Iron Man movies, Robert Downey Jr. went on to star in several other Marvel comics book/cancellation stints. A rare role that Downey played was the villainous General Thaddos in the Iron Man 3 movie. Most recently, he has played the villainous Mandarin in the sequel of the same film. For his part, Downey Jr. said that he has enjoyed playing both characters, and he has always wanted to play the character of Iron Man.
