When you consider that Iron Man is a movie based on a superhero comic book it’s amazing that the film manages to be so entertaining. Usually, when you see a trailer for a movie like this you are expecting it to be nothing short of a steaming pile of CGI garbage. Product this bad doesn’t happen by accident, it takes years of industry product makers working around the clock to produce something this tasteless and tedious.
Thankfully, there are some exceptions and the trailer for Iron Man is definitely one of them. Featuring the incredibly charismatic Robert Downey Jr in full Iron Man mode this teaser is sure to have your geek meter pegged. When the film opens you are shown a beat up Iron Man. His armor is banged up and his power is flickering. This is no way to start a movie. But as soon as he puts on the new set of armor and starts fighting, things pick up. RDJ has made it his mission to make us believe that he is Iron Man and it’s doubtful that anyone else could have pulled it off as well as he did.
The story centers around billionaire and weapons manufacturer Tony Stark, who is kidnapped by terrorists who use his technology against the world. He is forced into a situation where he must transform himself into the superhero known as Iron Man in order to rescue his captors and save humanity. Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges play his love interest and the ruthless henchmen that work for Stark. The film is a visual feast and director Jon Favreau makes sure that we don’t get bored with all of the action and special effects.
This is the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it sets a pretty high bar for other films to follow. Its only problem is that it is such a great film that it can only be judged against other excellent films from the same genre.
This is a movie that needs to be seen in order to fully appreciate it. As a super hero film it is on par with any other out there and is probably the best since Keaton’s Batman and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man. This movie is all about its lead character and if it were not for the amazing performance of RDJ, this would be a steaming pile of crap. But he is the best actor working today and he makes this movie. It’s almost worth seeing just to watch him in action. I’m sorry if that sounds like I am over-selling this but it is just that good. So go ahead and check it out, you won’t be disappointed. Just be sure to bring some kleenex. This is a tearjerker!
