A full Iron Man triathlon is 140 miles in length. It starts with a 2.4-mile swim, then follows a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile marathon run. Invented by John and Judy Collins in 1978, the Iron Man was the first full-length triathlon. The Collins’s were US Navy soldiers stationed in Hawaii. McDermott wrote a ten-page article about it. After the race, hundreds of curious participants contacted Collins to learn more about the Ironman.
