Marvel’s Iron Man is one of the most popular and recognizable superheroes from comics to movies. The massive metallic armor that the character wears is a symbol of his strength, power, and ingenuity. Underneath the suit is genius billionaire Tony Stark. He’s also the founder of Stark Industries and a founding member of the Avengers team.
While testing his new weapons in the jungles of Vietnam, Stark was nearly killed by a bomb. He was saved by the intervention of ex-boxer Harry “Happy” Hogan, who he hired as his chauffeur. Though Hogan resented his boss, he did not want to lose Stark. Eventually, the two became close friends.
Stark’s invention of unique automated armor allowed him to escape his kidnappers in enemy territory, although he kept his identity secret from those who held him captive. Upon returning to the United States, Stark was offered a position at S.H.I.E.L.D., where he would serve as director of the agency’s law enforcement division. In the aftermath of Marvel’s Civil War storyline that pitted heroes against each other, fan backlash caused the character to be rebooted with a new story and costume. Writers Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca redefined the character with a critically acclaimed run on the title.
While his origins may have changed, Iron Man has continued to fight injustice for decades. He has faced numerous foes, including the Crimson Dynamo, the Titanium Man and the ruthless rival Obadiah Stane. He has also helped to prevent nuclear disasters and even rescued Earth’s heroes from death.
The superhero has used his immense wealth to aid the world, funding the Maria Stark Foundation, a charity named after his mother, and donating his boyhood manor to be renamed Avengers Mansion and staffed by his personal assistant, Edwin Jarvis. He has also become a founding member of the Avengers team, taking his father’s teachings of giving back to the world to heart.
But despite being one of the most powerful people in the world, Stark is still a flawed human being who sometimes makes bad choices. His arrogance and ego often get the best of him, and he is not immune to making selfish mistakes. However, Iron Man always has a way of saving the day.
